Isat in the chapel, my fingers absently running over the worn edges of the hymnal in my lap. The familiar scent of old wood and lingering incense wrapped around me, but my mind was elsewhere. Ethan was just down the hall, finishing up his meeting. A small smile tugged at my lips as I thought about how hard he was working to control his... urges. For me. For us.

"Claire?" Pastor Jacob's voice startled me from my reverie. I looked up to see him approaching, his kind face creased with what looked like concern. "May I sit?"

"Of course, Pastor," I replied, smoothing my skirt nervously. He settled into the pew in front of me, twisting to face me. The way he positioned himself, giving me space while still maintaining eye contact, made me feel like I was about to receive a lecture.

"How have you been?" he asked, his tone gentle. "Your playing on Sunday was beautiful, but you seemed... distracted."

I blinked, trying to recall my performance. Had I been distracted? Everything lately seemed to blur together in a haze of happiness and... well, Ethan. "I'm doing well, Pastor," I said, forcing a smile. My stomach clenched with anxiety as I waited for him to get to the point.

After a moment of hesitation, he did just that. "We've noticed you arriving and leaving with one of the... hmmm, participants... of one of the support groups that borrow the conference room." He paused, his eyes searching my face. "Now, what you do in your free time is of course your own, but I wish to offer a word of warning. You're a good girl, Claire. I'd hate for you to throw away your reputation so easily."

His words hit me like a slap. I felt my cheeks burn with a mixture of embarrassment and indignation. He didn't know Ethan, didn't understand our relationship. But the ingrained respect for authority that had been drilled into me since childhood held my tongue. Instead, I nodded meekly. "Thank you for your advice, Pastor. I'll keep it in mind."

As if summoned by my thoughts, Ethan appeared at the chapel entrance, his presence a beacon of warmth in the suddenly chilly atmosphere. He waved, and I stood, grateful for the excuse to escape. "Thank you for your well-meaning concern," I murmured to Pastor Jacob before hurrying to Ethan's side.

As we left the church, Ethan's arm snaked around my waist, pulling me close. "Everything alright?" he asked, his dark eyes flicking between me and the church behind us. "The atmosphere in there felt weird, and I don't mean in a 'I'm a demon in a church' sort of way."

I forced a laugh, trying to shake off the unease from Pastor Jacob's words. "It's fine, just my worlds colliding a bit." I looked up at him, eager to change the subject. "So, what are we doing tonight?"

Ethan's face lit up with that boyish grin that never failed to make me smile. "There's this great sushi and karaoke bar that I wanted to try.
